20l Siwek sphere / Mike 3
Since the beginning of 2017, MIKE3, 20l Siwek sphere, Sipcon and Sippower are distributed together with Cesana AG. Formerly, these devices were supplied by Kühner AG (Birsfelden).
TÜV SÜD Schweiz AG will be responsible for production and distribution of these instruments as well as providing training and support whilst Cesana AG will be responsible for software, technical development and organization of the traditional calibration round robin tests CaRo

20 Liter Siwek Sphere
Determination of explosion indices of dust, gas and hybrid mixtures
For the efficient prevention of dust explosions by preventive explosion protection (e.g. explosion venting, explosion suppression) it is necessary to know the optimum explosion indices:
- the dust explosibility
- the lower explosibility limit (LEL)
- the maximum explosion pressure (Pmax)
- the dust-specific characteristic (Kmax)
- the limiting oxygen concentration (LOC)
These characteristics, especially those that describe the explosion behavior of combustible dusts, can be determined according to a standard procedure in the 20-l laboratory apparatus:
- ASTM E1226: Standard Test Method for Explosibility of Dust Clouds
- STM E1515: Standard test method for MEC - minimum explosible concentration of combustible dusts
- EN 14034-1: Determination of the maximum explosion pressure Pmax of dust clouds
- EN 14034-2: Determination of the maximum rate of explosion pressure rise (dp/dt)max of dust clouds
- EN 14034-3: Determination of the lower explosion limit LEL of dust clouds
- EN 14034-4: Determination of the limiting oxygen concentration LOC of dust clouds
- EN ISO/IEC 80079-20-2: Explosive atmopheres. Material characteristics. Combustible dust methods
MIKE-3
Apparatus for determining the minimum ignition energy of dust/air-mixtures
The minimum ignition energy (MIE) is the lowest energy value of a high-voltage capacitor discharge required to ignite the most ignitable dust/air mixture.
This characteristic can be determined according to international standards:
- EN 13821: Determination of minimum ignition energy of dust/air mixtures
- ASTM E 2019: Standard Test Method for Minimum Ignition Energy of a Dust Cloud in Air
- EC 61241-2-3: replaced by ISO/IEC 80079-20-2:2016
- ISO/IEC 80079-20-2:2016: Explosive atmospheres. Material characteristics. combustible dusts test methods
SIPCON
Data acquisition -and control system
replaced by the SIPCON data acquisition and control system.
Up to 4 different test equipment can be run simultaneously while recording the respective temperatures of the substance. For processing and storing, data are transmitted to a standard personal computer. Results can be displayed and printed numerically and graphically. The software on the personal computer contains a wealth of functions to evaluate the test results. When switching off the personal computer, Sipcon continues on its own. Sipcon itself contains no manual control elements and is intended to be operated right beside the test apparatus, the sensors being directly connected to it. Up to 6 Sipcon units running up to 12 test apparatus may be connected to a personal computer by means of a simple network.
